My rugby trip to South Africa was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Before the trip, I thought it would mainly be about playing rugby, but once I was there, I realized it taught me far more than just how to be a better player. It helped me grow as a person and changed the way I see the world.
From the moment arrived, could feel how important rugby is in South Africa. Every training session and match was intense. The players we faced were bigger, stronger, and extremely passionate about the game. Every day with the Sharks program was professional, from the workouts and training sessions to the accommodations.
At times it was challenging and even intimidating, but it pushed me to work harder than I ever had before. I learned that real improvement comes from stepping out of your comfort zone and backing yourself, even when things feel tough. I had the opportunity to play with the club team College Rovers and each game made me more confident and more determined to improve my skills.
One of the most powerful parts of the trip was meeting local players and communities. I got to experience the beauty of the country from surfing to a safari with several teammates. These opportunities were set up by the staff at the Sharks Academy and I was extremely grateful for them. Many of the local players had far less than what I am used to at home, their love for rugby and their positive attitude stood out to me.
Playing rugby together showed me how sport can connect people from completely different backgrounds. It is just about love and passion for the same sport. It made me more grateful for the opportunities I have and helped me realize how lucky I am to play the game I love.
Being so far from home also helped m e mature. I had to take responsibility for myself, support my teammates, and represent m y team with pride and respect. Spending so much time together strengthened our bond, and I built friendships that I know will last a long time. The trip taught me the importance of teamwork, not just on the field but in everyday life.
Looking back, my rugby trip to South Africa was about much more than winning or losing games. It challenged me physically and mentally, opened my eyes to different ways of life, and helped shape the person I am becoming. It reminded me that rugby is not just a sport, but a way to learn discipline, respect, and resilience-lessons I will carry with me long after the trip ended.
